New England Womens' Pool Tour WPBA Qualifier
Silver Cue Billiard Club
Woburn, MA

l. to r. Wendy Snow, Nicole Albergaria, Liz Taylor, and Corrine Jonson

The New England Women's Pool Tour held its season opener April 6, 2008 at the newly renovated Silver Cue Billiard Club in Woburn, MA. The event attendance was the highest ever for a non-state championship event. The tour would like to thank Marc Dionne for hosting and all the women who supported the tour by attending.

Of note were the performances of the 5th/6th place finishers Bonnie Saritelli and Nicole Christie. Saritelli scored a 7-2 victory over Candi Rego, the winner of the the October 2007 Qualifier. Christie, the youngest tour member, had an impressive finish considering this was her first tour appearance. The tour looks forward to seeing this up-and-coming player again.

The first round saw a match between two favorites: multiple event winner Liz Taylor and Nicole Albergaria, who has cashed in many tour events. This long and exciting match went hill-hill with Albergaria eventually getting the victory. The only other close match Albergaria had was against Wendy Snow, who also made it to the hill. In the hotseat match Albergaria faced Canadian Corrine Johnson, who recently placed third in the WPBA Regional Tour Championships and had played some really strong matches on her way to the end of the winners' side. But despite this previous strong performance Johnson lost the match to Albergaria 7-0.

Johnson played Liz Taylor in the semi-final match. Taylor had just come from a long 7-5 match against Wendy Snow. Taylor made several uncharacteristic misses and Johnson took advantage to win the match 7-3.

Johnson moved on the the finals to re-match Albergaria. Johnson took an early 1-0 lead in the match but a scratch on the 4 ball in game two allowed Albergaria to combo in the 9 and tie the match. Albergaria missed an 8 ball in game three allowing Johnson to run out, but Johnson returned the favor in game 4 by missing the 6 ball allowing Albergaria to do the same. Albergaria took game five and in game six left Johnson with a difficult cut shot on the 7 ball, which was on the rail. Johnson beautifully sliced the 7 down the rail into the pocket but ended up with poor position on the 9 ball. Johnson missed the 9, leaving Albergaria with a difficult cut shot. Albergaria bore down and pocketed the ball, putting her ahead 4-2. Albergaria went on to take the next three games to win the finals 7-2.

Albergaria will be playing at the BCA Generation Pool.Com 9-Ball Championship June 6-12, 2008 in Charlotte, NC.

The next tour event will be Sunday, June 22, 2008 at Ultimate Billiards in Berlin, CT. The day prior to the event the tour will host an open 9-Ball tournament for B,C, and D level men and women (no A level or higher players allowed). For more details go to www.newomenstour.com
